Dump Cake

by Heather on August 31, 2010

Good morning everyone!  Make sure you check out Val’s amazing story over at Faces of Beauty…and submit your own if you haven’t already!

We should call this post “how to get all of your friends to propose to you cake” because this classic dump cake will certainly do just that. At first I was a little wary of the power of dump cake (and the name?!), but after going camping this weekend and making this sans pineapple for all of our friends…well, let’s just say it could get ugly if you have to share.

When I was growing up all of my friends wanted pink Barbie cakes, My Little Pony cakes, and princess cakes for their birthdays.  I wanted dump cake. My parents couldn’t believe it!  A kid’s birthday cake for less than $5?!  It’s simple, and you only need 4 (MAYBE 5) ingredients.

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple in juice
  • 1 stick of butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, optional

First things first I had to line up some of the ingredients for their mug shot:

Now guys, don’t get nervous here; this really IS that simple!  Preheat the oven to 350.

Hey, I can do that!

In a bowl (or in the 9×13 dish) mix together the pineapple (don’t drain) and the cherry pie filling.

There must be some kind of trick here…

Next combine the yellow cake mix with the softened stick of butter til crumbly.  This would be the time to add the chopped nuts if you use them.

Yep, definitely a trick involved…

Sprinkle the crumb mixture on top of the pie filling/pineapple mixture.  Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

Hold the phone…that’s it?!

I remember going to town on the leftover dump cake in the mornings…just one more spoonful to even it out, you know?  And then all of a sudden it would all be gone!  Oops…  Mom, I swear it was Salah…!

I promise, this will help win you friends, reconcile with enemies, and meet your dream man (or woman).  But none of that matters since you probably won’t want to share anyway. :)

I have to admit…. I laughed a little when I read the title “Dump” Cake… ;)

That’s an amazingly easy recipe!!! Very cool!

3 Salah August 31, 2010

hahaha and I’d walk into the kitchen for breakfast and mom would say, “SALAH” hahahaha

My hubs loves that cake!

5 Kristy August 31, 2010

Delicious and easy, my kind of baking! :)

I love dump cakes, my mom used to make them all the time! But you make it a little different: I usually sprinkle on the yellow cake mix and then pour a melted stick of butter on top — it creates more of an actual crust instead of your crumbled crust (which looks way good by the way!)

We have an awesome pumpkin dump cake that we have every Thanksgiving. It is sooooo good!

8 Mary August 31, 2010

That would make an awesome breakfast… for one.
(If that ‘one’ were me!:)
I actually have a sugar-sensitivity, so I can’t eat things like this, but I live vicariously through your blog. :) Yum!!
Thank you!!

Wow! That is not what I expected :-) Looks delish though!

BTW, Hubby and I booked a room in Longmont about 20 min from the race start. Still think you will be available to meet up that weekend? Hope so!

12 Angela August 31, 2010

My daughter would looove this! I’m all about simplicity these days.

13 Joslyn @ missfitbliss August 31, 2010

Oh my goodness my mom used to make this cake for me and my sisters when we were little. We could smell it cooking from a mile away and knew we were in for a great dinner that night!

It is funny though to watch people’s reactions whenever I make it these day. They get very nervous and assume I could be a terribly clueless cook;)

For some reason, I imagined chocolate involved. I love fruity cakes

15 Megan August 31, 2010

Super easy and delightfully delicious? I am sold! This looks yummy! :)

16 Amber@momsgottheruns August 31, 2010

I’ve never heard of this before but it looks/sounds good, and SIMPLE! I’d be nervous having a huge cake like that around me though… :)

I LOVE dump cakes… they are definitely underrated!

21 LiveForTheRun August 31, 2010

This is way too easy to not try. Seriously, only if you insist. I love cherry and pineapple. Could you substitute any fillings?

22 Maria August 31, 2010

How could I never have heard of this? What planet was I living on? Thank you for opening my eyes. As a huge fan of pineapple upside down cake, I am certain this will rock my socks off.

23 Tina August 31, 2010

I feel like this recipe was made for me. Did you get inspiration after our chat yesterday about teaching me how to cook? ;) LOL

24 jessica @ how sweet August 31, 2010

I have heard about dump cake for years! Never had it tho. Gotta change that!

25 Angela August 31, 2010

My mom used to make dump cake when I was young – she didn’t have the time to really bake with 11 kids running around. I completely forgot about them until now. This one looks delish!

26 Heather C August 31, 2010

Ha, oh the power of a simple and delicious cake! ;) I have no doubt that went quickly, around the campfire!

27 Dorry August 31, 2010

I’ve had dump cake! I remember it to be the most amazing combo of gooey goodness ever.

28 Jean@RoastedRootsandPumpkinSpice August 31, 2010

I don’t think I’ve ever had this before. What an easy tasty combination of ingredients!

29 Anna August 31, 2010

Finally…baking even I can handle!! :-)

30 eatingmachine August 31, 2010

my family used to make something we called dump cake when we were camping that was a can of pie filling put into a dutch oven. you’d add a box of cake mix on top of that, and then a can of soda (sprite for white cake, coke for chocolate) and cooked over the campfire. I’d forgotten all about it until I read this!

31 Blair @ Wild & Precious August 31, 2010

sounds fabulous!!! and not to terribly difficult.. which is good.. cause i’m scary in the kitchen!!

just found your blog for the first time & love it!
Hope you’ll swing by! http://www.wild-and-precious.com

32 Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) August 31, 2010

I have heard of dump cake many times but had no idea what it was – or that it involved fruit. Looks great!

33 Ellen@FirednFabulous August 31, 2010

Yes, I can attest to this. I brought a very similar dump cake to a cookout last summer and I was definitely the most popular gal there :)

34 Lisa August 31, 2010

That looks so delicious! =)

35 Liz @ Tip Top Shape August 31, 2010

Sounds gross. Looks ridiculously delicious. Great recipe!!

36 Alex @ IEatAsphalt August 31, 2010

Fabulous! One of my friend’s b-day is on Thursday and I might just have to make this for her! Plus, she’s a new friend so I’m confident this would win her over… and all of the other party attendants! :)

37 Lauren August 31, 2010

This looks so easy even I (a baker’s worst nightmare) could possibly attempt! :)

38 Katie @ Healthy Heddleston September 1, 2010

Oh wow, this looks really good! I will have to try this out using a GF vanilla cake! I’ve never even heard of this ‘dump’ cake before!

39 SheFit September 2, 2010

This is my FAVORITE cake! I can’t make it all the time cuz I end up eating the whole dish :)

40 Tammy September 4, 2010

I love these. For a ::ever so slightly:: lighter version, but still yummy, I just take a big can (or 2 small cans) of peaches and dump it into the pan along with the liquid and just mix the cake mix right in. It allows you to omit the butter and is still really yummy. And it allows me to be even more lazy! I usually serve it right out of the over over some vanilla bean ice cream.

41 Kris Konick July 23, 2013

Just put this in the oven for a church dinner tomorrow…maybe they’ll forget to set it out? JK!!!! Needless to say I am excited to try it!!

42 Heather July 24, 2013

If they do forget that just means more for you! I love it more the next day myself ;)
