July 2010
Good morning and happy Friday! How are y’all this fine last Friday of July?
Hold the phone…
Last Friday of July?!?!?!
Wasn’t it just January?!
I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun! Yesterday’s breakfast was another SIAB (smoothie in a bowl). The smoothie part is 1.5 cups of almond milk, 1 cup frozen strawberries, and 1 cup frozen pineapple:
And that cereal on top is AMAZING! A week or so ago I was contacted by Attune Foods to see if I would like to test out their new Uncle Sam cereal (this is not my photo…I accidentally ripped the box! Click on the photo for the source).
Now, I’m not much of a cereal gal, but I figured it never hurts to TRY so I said yes! I am so glad that I did…this cereal is incredibly tasty, SUPER crunchy, not too sweet, and it packs a great nutritional punch too! Check out the stats from the Attune website:
You get all of that, plus flavor. AND I’ve seen quite a few bloggers making savory dishes with it as well, which makes me really excited to start cooking with it too! And so, in conclusion I believe that I have now become an Uncle Sam cereal girl
Thanks Annelies and Attune!
Lunch was great and free yesterday! Our landlord at work held a tenant appreciation BBQ lunch…but, since it was with the rest of my company, I did not do the food papparazzi thing. I also ate way too much, which resulted in a crazy stomachache! Bad choice, Heather, bad choice. I was feeling pretty gross the rest of the day, so when we got home I did the WillPower Method workout, and then made a healthy pizza for dinner:
This is half of a ball of Whole Foods pizza dough, 1/4 cup of Roasted Garlic marinara, chopped broccoli, sliced mushrooms, sliced zucchini, 1 piece of chicken sausage, and about 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella. I had half, and it was completely delicious! Hurray for lunch today!
MARRIAGE REF FRIDAY
Today’s Marriage Ref isn’t really a referee situation, but I thought I’d see what you guys think! A couple weeks ago I was talking to my good friend Cherise, who has 4 kiddos. She was telling me that in a family with kids, there is usually someone who is the “picker,” meaning that person is usually the one who cleans up the boogers, the sleep in kids’ eyes, clips the fingernails and toenails, etc. Basically this person is usually the one who takes care of all the nastiness that comes with kids. This cracked me up because in our marriage I KNOW that I will be the “picker”…there’s no way that Nate would voluntarily do all of that stuff (although I know he would to help me out)!
And so, my question is this: Do you agree that there is typically one “picker”? And do you think that it would be YOU or your significant other? If you already have kids make sure you weigh in…I’m super curious to find out what your perspective is!

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic this week.
10 months ago our great friends Daniel and Abbey got married.
This shot is one of my favorites from that wedding.

Last night our friend Josh proposed to his girlfriend Ashley (who, by the way, is also a good friend)! Nate and I have been in on it for the past couple of weeks since Josh (who is also a photographer) asked us to take pictures. So, being the inherently sneaky people we are (I wore a camouflage hat – clearly I’m a professional) we said yes! Nate climbed up on the roof, and I hid in the windows of the Museum of Contemporary Art acress the street.
Here are some of the combined photos from Nate and myself from their engagement in Denver!
Congratulations Josh + Ashley! We can’t wait for the wedding!
If you’ve been engaged, how were you proposed to? Or, if you haven’t been engaged, what’s the best proposal story you’ve heard? Nate proposed in Plano, Texas on New Year’s Eve by a 40-foot Christmas tree. He told me that we were going to take a picture by it using a self-timer on the camera, so he set the camera up, ran over, got down on one knee…and proposed! It was so special, and I’m so thankful that we have that photo to remember it by

How could you NOT have baby fever when you’re surrounded by great friends who have the most adorable children in the world?
That’s what I thought ![]()

Good morning! Halfway through the week…can I get a “WOOHOO!” from all of y’all?!
Yesterday’s eats were pretty amazing; first up, a Pina Colada GM:
Turkey sandwich on whole wheat with spinach:
Ok, ok, and some Doritos because they make my heart sing:
Lunch was super rainy, so I went to Whole Foods to read and picked up a packet Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter (I ended up just tasting this and then spreading the rest on some toast for Nate):
“This magic moment…”
There was a time when, in my infantile naivety, I was grossed out by the thought of bacon and dark chocolate. Apart? Perfect. Together? Stank nasty.
Well my dear friends, I am OK with admitting my wrong on this one. I purchased it on a whim, just thinking about the fact that I REALLY needed chocolate in that moment. And so, in a moment of desperation, I went with my gut instinct.
“Mmmmmmmm…dark chocolate…….I can feel the worries of the day melting away……”
“But wait! What’s that I taste? A slight smokiness?”
“BAM! Salt!”
“Dear Lord, thank you for chocolate, bacon, and salt. Amen”
You know, it went a little something like that

Dinner was amazing at our friend Emma’s house, and I’m not sorry to say that I ate about 5 pieces of garlic toast. It’s been way, WAY too long since I last explored the amazingness that is butter + garlic + bread. Dinner was this great pasta salad (there’s lettuce under there) with tomatoes, bell pepper, grilled chicken, and a Parmesan dressing:
We had a great time getting to meet new friends, and hang out with our amazing group. Tonight should be fun…but I’ll just have to share the details of that later!
What’s the weirdest flavor combination you have ever heard of that sounds delicious? What’s the weirdest one YOU’VE TRIED? If you have recipes, do share

This is my gorgeous friend Rebecca and her younger son. We’ll call him Baby Blue.
Because even though this picture isn’t in color I think you can tell his eyes are startlingly blue.
I think this has got to be one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken!

Sometimes the only thing that sounds good is a smoothie with milk, banana, and spinach:
Sometimes the only thing I have time to eat for lunch is cookies:
Sometimes my lunch and snack flip-flop and I have Lean Cuisine pizza 5 minutes before leaving work:
Sometimes I have a really crappy workout where my legs are so tight I just sit in the middle of Boulder Creek and hope that they get numb.
Sometimes I just have a day and the only thing that sounds good for dinner is Chick-fil-A:
I mean, hey, sometimes this Texas girl needs some fried chicken in her life!
Sometimes I think fried food hits the spot like nothing else can.
What are some sometimes moments you have? Because sometimes we just need what we want!
Happy Tuesday y’all!

…and through the woods!
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, but I really can’t wait til fall.
Little known fact: I’ve been out of college for 4 years now, and I still view my year in semesters.
Old habits die hard ![]()

I said it Friday, and I’ll say it again: There are NOT enough days in the weekend! Back when I had to work one weekend day and take a weekday off instead I thought it was just this horrid time…but having 2 consecutive weekend days is just as hard!
OK, enough complaining
Yesterday was a whirlwind but super fun! Church was awesome (as usual) and afterwards we got to go eat lunch with some of our closest friends! We went to the mecca of all health and wellness restaurants, Buffalo Wild Wings
Now, don’t get me wrong…this girl can down some wings. But I just wasn’t in the mood! Plus I just wanted something healthy(ish), so I ended up getting a Boca Burger with fries in lieu of wings:
It was about what I expected since I’ve had Boca burgers a million times; however, this one was fairly dry. Still flavorful though! I shared some of my fries with Nate so that I could snag a wing though
The rest of the afternoon we hung out with our friends Murphy and Lauren (they’re getting married in 3 weeks!!!) for some premarital counseling and just chill time. At one point Nate and Murphy went to help another friend move, and I started reading Eat Pray Love. I am now wishing that someone would pay me to travel and write a book about it. Just sayin’ is all
So yes, this post is short and sweet. We had a lot that happened this weekend, but now it’s time to focus on the very busy week ahead! In the spirit of Eat Pray Love, I’d love to have you list out the three foreign places you’d visit if you were going on a journey to discover the art of pleasure, the art of devotion, and a balance between the two! Here are mine:
- The art of pleasure: Italy. Not to totally and completely copy Elizabeth Gilbert’s idea, but I’ve always wanted to go to Italy to discover the art of pleasure in food and life. Not that I know from personal experience, but everything I’ve heard is that Italians know how to live and how to do it well. I don’t think I’d even begin to care if I put on weight doing it at all
- The art of devotion: New Zealand. Again, I’ve never been here, but I have seen pictures and heard first-hand accounts. In the book, the Elizabeth Gilbert talks about the art of devotion in a spiritual sense. She visits India to meet and study under her Guru; however, as a Christian I don’t necessarily believe in a specific place as the heart of where to find God. I believe that God is all around, and as such I want to be in a place that wholly exemplifies God as the Creator. Not that New Zealand would house a spiritual connection to God, but I think I would be able to revel in His magnificent glory in a place that is absolutely stunning.
- A balance between the two: Hawaii. Now, this one I can say I’ve been to. HOWEVER, I will say that I’ve never really experienced people with such joy in living and uncharacteristic devotion to God as I have when I’ve been in Hawaii. Not that this description is all-encompassing, but I do believe that a solid balance between the two would be reached here by me!
